MACKENZIE

Mrs. Hansen opened the door, her eyes crinkling into a welcoming smile. “Mackenzie, good morning! Please, come in.”

“Good morning, Mrs. Hansen.” I smiled and stepped into the house. “How’s Hunter today?”

“You’re just in time to find out,” she said, closing the door behind me. “Come with me!”

I followed her down the hall and into the first bedroom on the right. The walls were painted in a yellow and white striped pattern. It made the room feel cheery and warm. A chocolate brown dresser sat in the corner of the room, next to what looked like a toy chest. The black gym mat was folded and laying on the floor, partially tucked under the twin-sized hospital bed on the other side of the room.

Hunter lay in the bed, blankets pulled up to his chin with his head tilted toward the window illuminated with morning light. His eyes were open, sleepily shifting back and forth; his face pale and expressionless.

Mrs. Hansen motioned me closer and whispered, “Watch his face.” She folded back the blankets and leaned over her son so her face was hovering a foot directly above his. “Good morning, Hunter!” she said, rubbing gentle circles on his chest. “How’s my sweet boy doing this morning?”

Hunter turned toward his mother, his blank face transforming into a grin of pure joy. His entire countenance beamed, like the golden glow of sunlight coming in from the window, only stronger. His happiness was contagious. I smiled, feeling so elated I thought I might burst. Hunter suddenly squealed, catching me completely by surprise. A giggle escaped from my lips.

Mrs. Hansen turned to me, radiating with happiness, too. “It really warms your heart, doesn’t it?”

I was grinning like a fool. “Yes! It’s so incredible to see him light up like that.” I shook my head in amazement. “Does he do this for you every morning?”

She nodded. “Just about. He does have his off days, though.”

“Well, I’m so glad I was able to see it my first day on the job.”

“Me too,” she agreed, smiling.

Mrs. Hansen bent over to pull the gym mat out from under the bed, then paused mid-task. “You know what?” She stood upright and tapped her lip with a thoughtful expression. “I think I have a way to make this easier on us.” She turned and walked out of the room, calling over her shoulder, “I’ll be right back.”

I watched her leave, then sat on the bed next to Hunter. His grin had faded, but he still looked generally happy to be awake.

"Hey, handsome,” I said, grabbing his soft hand. “I loved getting to see your big smile and hear your voice today. You can cheer anyone out of a bad mood with that smile of yours, can’t you?”

Remembering how his mother had leaned over him so he could see her, I positioned my face in his line of sight. “I’m going to carry you today while your brother is at work.” Hunter’s eyes bounced my way an extra couple of seconds. “Hopefully, it won’t be too uncomfortable for you.
